Growing up in Baguio, Ruben and I have a flock of pigeons for pets. We’ve fashioned a wooden box used for ‘tuyo’ (smoked fish) as their nest/home. Our first pair was given to me by Dr. Sabater from his own flock. We raised the these birds since they were small, feeding them by hand and they treated us as their parents – landing on our hands to feed even when they became adults and had chicks of their own.
This is why I have a soft spot for the birds. My daughters affectionately call them my friends. I feed wild birds in our backyard with left over bread. Lately, however, I’ve been buying bread to feed the birds everyday. Most of our visiting birds are brown in varying sizes, some are black and the odd magpies (black and white).
Recently however, we have an increasing number of lorikeets (green parrots) that frequent our yard. They are more accustomed to human. I can come very close to take photos and they don’t fly off like the other birds.
Yesterday we had a flock of cockatoos – they are even more confident. Almost announcing their arrival and demanding some food be served. When I came out to add more bread – they just hover around and swoop on the bread – it was all gone in an instant. We were told not to encourage such behaviour as they can be very destructive – but whose going to tell these backyard bird kings.
